There’s something magical about Avalon. Maybe it’s the soft, powdery sand, the pastel-painted skies at sunset, or the way the ocean feels calmer here than anywhere else on the Jersey Shore. Whatever it is, it’s one of my favorite places for high school senior portraits — and this session with the new senior in this family makes it extra special.
Photographing repeat clients is always a gift. It means a family trusts me enough to return, and it gives me the chance to create something completely fresh each time. Even though I photographed her older sister a few years back, this session had its own energy, its own style, and its own story to tell.
Avalon is a popular senior portrait destination, and you’ll see many photographers using the same dunes, same poses, and same angles. Beautiful? Yes. But predictable. Here's how I make a beach session different:
Before we ever touched the sand, we spent time going over what was important to Carly, and how to showcase that. Then we went over clothes that would actually photograph beautifully in Avalon’s colors — soft blues, whites, and neutrals that allow her personality to shine without competing with the scenery. Every detail matters, right down to how her gorgeous yellow dress moves with the breeze.
Teens don’t want to look stiff or overly posed — they want to look like the best version of themselves. I guide every pose, every angle, every shift of weight so they look effortless and confident. No awkward standing around or guessing what to do with hands.
Most photographers shoot straight into the sunset and hope for the best. I’m constantly adjusting - and bringing my own light to mimic the sun when needed, using the dunes as natural reflectors, shooting side-light for glowing skin and more. And if it's cloudy, like with this session, honestly that's even better as the light is even softer.
And of course we got her mom and sister to jump in for a few pictures too and the results are so sweet - you can just feel the love and connection these women share!
A gallery full of beauty, sea breeze, confidence, and personality. Something uniquely Carly, not just “another beach session.”
And for this family, it’s another chapter in a story we’ve been building together. I’m honored every time a parent says, “We couldn’t imagine anyone else photographing our girls.” That’s the heart of what I do — creating beautiful portraits and meaningful experiences that families cherish long after senior year ends.
Or do you know of someone else who does? Most senior sessions are done during the summer before senior year starts?I t's not too soon to get the ball rolling. You've got activities, family vacations and college tours to navigate. It's great to get this on the calendar so you aren't stressed about what you might have missed.
So please share this post with anyone you think might be interested. We work with seniors from all over, and particularly Voorhees, Marlton, Cherry Hill, Haddonfield, Moorestown along with going into downtown Philadelphia and Brigantine, Ocean City or your favorite shore town!
