The right photograph can communicate so much before a single word is spoken. When Julie, an executive and leadership coach, booked me for a personal branding session, our goal was to capture more than what she looked like. We wanted images that showed her presence—someone knowledgeable, thoughtful and approachable—qualities that matter deeply in the work she does helping leaders grow.
Great personal branding photos aren't just about looking polished. They're about communicating who you are and how you show up in your work. And that starts well before my camera comes out.
Every branding client has an online consultation with me so we can talk through their goals, how they want to be perceived and where the images will be used. From there, I'll suggest lighting, give wardrobe direction and location suggestions to support the feeling they want their photos to convey.
Here's a few tips to help make your branding photography truly reflect you.
1. Start With Your Message
Before the camera even comes out, think about what you want people to feel when they see your photo. Do you want to appear approachable, confident, creative, or calm and authoritative? Your expression, clothing, lighting, and background should all support that message.
2. Wear Something That Feels Like You
The best branding photos happen when you feel comfortable and authentic. Choose outfits that fit well and reflect your industry and personality. Do you need help shopping? Or choosing from what's in your closet? In our zoom consult, we'll go over what you want to wear and if you need a stylist to help, we have folks I can recommend.
3. Think Beyond the Headshot
Your brand isn’t just one photo. A strong branding session includes images you can use across your website, LinkedIn, social media, and marketing materials—photos of you working, thinking, or simply being yourself in a natural moment. We'll plan for this, again in the consult.
4. Confidence Comes From Preparation
Almost everyone feels a little awkward in front of a camera at first. That’s completely normal. I've photographed hundreds (maybe thousands) of people and know how to prepare you and help you relax so your natural confidence will come through.
5. Authentic Always Wins
In a world where many images feel overly filtered or artificial, authenticity stands out. The right photograph captures the real person behind the brand—someone people can trust and connect with.
"I CANNOT RECOMMEND JOAN MORE HIGHLY. Joan is a consummate professional with high standards of excellence, clear creative vision, and a warm personality.
I decided to work with Joan, having seen her portfolio of both traditional portraits and authentic lifestyle photographs that represented the perfect blend of my brand.
Joan met with me multiple times to get a sense of who I am and how to best portray me and my work. She even came over to my house to help me pick out the right clothes and accessories. From start to finish, Joan was a reliable and decisive guide.
She was patient with me and eager to partner with me to create photographs that convey who I am as a human being. All the images we created are wonderful and I'm so pleased to have chosen to work with Joan."
